“Wait up, Ana!” The first figure froze and his jet black hands formed fists. He turned bright grey eyes to glare at his grinning partner, though it was weak; exhausted from the anxiety that was building up inside him.

“I told you not to call me that.” It was more of a growl than a statement. “It's Ananiah. Ananiah Road."

"And I'm Iduna. Just Iduna. Names are insignificant." She just kept smiling that infuriating smile, her pure white skin equally as blinding. "We all know how you like to be the moody one in our relationship. You always call me the same name. I'm just trying to spice things up. Plus, yours is too long for my liking.”

He ignored the jab at his grim demeanor and continued to swear under his breath. His white cloak, clothes, and boots were turning black with the ash below his feet, mirroring his temper. “Can we spend one awakening where you don't come up with a ridiculous nickname for me? Its three blasted syllables, Iduna. I’m sure you can manage.”

He continued his tumultuous stride, not waiting for an answer.

She easily kept pace, the shadows of her own cloak flailing wildly behind her; the ash merely weaved its way into its already dark fabric . “If you keep that frown on your face, it'll stick, Nai."

He grunted, wondering what exactly had brought on this insanity. “You weren't this annoying the last time we were summoned.”

She grinned and stepped in to walk beside him, her similar grey eyes cooking up a storm. “Now don’t be like that, Aia. Just because your angelic nature has to spoil your good mood, doesn’t mean you have to take it out on me. You should learn to enjoy life while you can.”

He snarled and turned round on her. “Only you. Only you can possible enjoy this.” He gestured to the graveyard beneath their feet.” It’s sick. Millions of people lived here and they were all burnt to a crisp in a matter of seconds. The smell of it all makes me vomit. How can you just smile and rip their beating hearts out of their chests without batting an eye? I knew you were an animal, Iduna, but I didn’t know you were a monster.”

She stopped cold and stared. They locked eyes across the wasteland, two polar opposites. Their colors inverted against the other. His hair shone white, right side long and the other buzz cut short. Her black tresses echoed his own, with the left side long and other side cut just before her skull. His white hair glowed against his jet black skin. Her skin shimmered like white fire between the shades of hers.

They gazed at the other with the only color they shared. A grey that lingered between eyes that contained the duality of their natures.

Iduna snickered. “Monster? Me? They’re the real monsters, AR. They’ve done the same to us for centuries. Don’t you think we deserve vengeance? Don’t you think they deserve what’s coming to them for all they’ve done? All the rules they've broken? They drove us from our home and stripped us of our power. Have you forgotten your duty? The First put us here for a reason. To keep these children in line.”

Another snippet from Waterwings. An on and off again story that refuses to stop growing and gives me a major headache from all the ideas it gives me.

Iduna and Nai are guardians of a sort, though I won't say of what. Spoilers and all that.
